Poor grooming seems both too trivial and too obvious to be a major problem, yet employment specialists and career coaches consistently agree that it is a major factor that keeps women from getting the job they want. Although appearance has nothing to do with one’s work capacity, dress and make-up are one of the ways we describe ourselves to others. But far too many women are less than careful about their appearance. This doesn’t mean that someone has to be beautiful. What it does mean is that she must be neat, well groomed, attentive to the little things like fingernails, and above all, suitable dress, which is not more revealing than it should be.
Before leaving home. . . try this little exercise:
When in the latest fashion
So attractively you’re dressed,
Won’t you try some exercises?
Just as a little test:
Stand before your mirror
Full length on the wall,
Turn around, bend over
As if picking up a ball.
What is staring back at you?
Is all hidden by your dress?
Remember people’s thoughts
Can easily digress!
Next reach high in the air
As on the flip chart you write.
Ask someone who’s watching you
Exactly what’s in sight!
Will folks on chairs
Get quite a different view?
Is it appropriate what they’re seeing,
When they are watching you?
Now sit before your mirror
And try a pose or two,
Like crossing right leg over
Left, as we are prone to do.
While keeping up with fashion,
Remember in the end….
It’s really the little things
That count…
Like how to sit and stand and bend.
Remember: You only have one chance to make a first impression!
Good grooming is a must no matter what business you are in, but especially in the business of women interviewing for success!
